maps as a source of inspiration. Britain’s preeminent designer, Paul Smith, uses map prints to line everything from umbrellas to men’s shoes, and the box of his latest fragrance, “Paul Smith London,” is covered in print from the classic A-Z map of London. In turn, French artist Elisabeth Lecourt looks to travel maps for her fine art pieces.
British-educated Lecourt, who attended the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, calls her latest series Les Robes Géographiques. Using folded maps to form origami-like dresses,
shirts and other pieces of clothing, she mounts the final piece in a frame. The 33-year-old artist first started working with maps in 2002. “As a cartographer depicts maps to understand the world we live in, I

Lecourt is represented by Eric Franck, the dealer who discovered Tracey Emin and Rebecca Horn; she has a U.S. solo show coming up with gallerist Suki Werman. The completed series of Les Robes Géographiques will also be on display in London in the fall of 2005 ..."
